Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the correcting of crowded or mis-placed teeth.

There are many reasons people wish to undergo orthodontic treatment, one of which is for aesthetic reasons.

Most children begin treatment at the ages of 12 to 14 when the baby teeth have been replaced by the adult dentition and the child is still growing. However, teeth mature at different rates so the individual should not be alarmed if on assessment, they are still too early for treatment.

If you feel your son or daughter requires braces, it is important that you get them assessed by their dentist as soon a possible. He or she may be able to carry out the orthodontic treatment themselves, or else make sure the child is on an orthodontic waiting list at a practice specializing in such.

No matter what teeth look like to the individual, only a dentist or orthodontist can tell whether they function correctly or not in relation to the jaw.

There are many different types of orthodontic appliances. One of the most common is the 'fixed' brace, or train-tracks as they seem to be more commonly known as!
